0.4.2 Release of Elisa

Elisa is a music player developed by the KDE community that strives to be simple and nice to use. We also recognize that we need a flexible product to account for the different workflows and use-cases of our users.

We focus on a very good integration with the Plasma desktop of the KDE community without compromising the support for other platforms (other Linux desktop environments, Windows and Android).

We are creating a reliable product that is a joy to use and respects our users privacy. As such, we will prefer to support online services where users are in control of their data.

I am happy to announce the release of 0.4.2 version of the Elisa music player.

The following fixes have been added to this release:

  • Fix restore of tracks with missing metadata in playlist (this was the case for tracks without album metadata) by Matthieu Gallien ;
  • Fix view selector not following the color theme (BUG 408435) by Matthieu Gallien.

Getting Involved

I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the development of Elisa, including code contributions, code reviews, testing, and bug reporting and triaging. Without all of you, I would have stopped working on this project.

New features and fixes are already being worked on. If you enjoy using Elisa, please consider becoming a contributor yourself. We are happy to get any kind of contributions!

We have some tasks that would be perfect junior jobs. They are a perfect way to start contributing to Elisa. There are more not yet reported here but reported in bugs.kde.org.

The flathub Elisa package allows an easy way to test this new release.

Elisa source code tarball is available here. There is no Windows setup. There is currently a blocking problem with it (no icons) that is being investigated. I hope to be able to provide installers for later bugfix versions.

The phone/tablet port project could easily use some help to build an optimized interface on top of Kirigami. It remains to be seen how to handle this related to the current desktop UI. This is something very important if we want to also support free software on mobile platforms.

  1. Elis browsing music files is based on baloo. In the system setup of the plasma, indexing of the NTFS partition is not allowed. I keep music on the NTFS partition. Baloo is a very problematic program that people often complain about.

    1. Unfortunately I had to uninstall the program. The program does not work well, it does not recognize that the baloo is active. In order to listen to my music collection I had to allow in the system setup to search and index the entire 2TB disc. On the disk I have a 1TB NTFS partition with music. I watched the terminal report that the baloo is not active, but this is not true because in Doplhyn the files are neatly recorded when they are made, e.g. Today, yesterday, look at Dolphin file manager on the left side of the program. I tried and tested the program in Manjar with plasma 5.16.2, Neon user edition plasma 5.16.2 and Calculate linux plasma. If I allow in system setup to search and index that disk of 2TB, it picks up the whole system.

  2. Hi, thanks for Elisa and the bunch of ours you and your team have invested in this great music player. The integration into Plasma is fantastic, the look and feel of Elisa also. Maybe I am blind, but is there no search function for artists or tracks inside Elisa?

  3. I’ve got the following error when compiling on Kubuntu 19.04:
    CMake Error at src/CMakeLists.txt:183 (kconfig_add_kcfg_files):
    Unknown CMake command “kconfig_add_kcfg_files”.

    What am I missing ?

  4. Hallo.

    I have installed the last version (19.12.0) but theres no albumes, artists, tracks nor genres. When I launch it from the conoles I read:

    $ elisa
    qrc:/qml/NavigationActionBar.qml:248:32: Invalid property assignment: string expected – Assigning null to incompatible properties in QML is deprecated. This will become a compile error in future versions of Qt.
    : QML QQuickLayoutAttached: Binding loop detected for property “preferredHeight”
    org.kde.elisa.indexers.manager: Local file system indexer is inactive
    org.kde.elisa.indexers.manager: Baloo indexer is unavailable
    org.kde.elisa.indexers.manager: Baloo indexer is inactive
    MediaPlayList::setPersistentState QMap((“currentTrack”, QVariant(int, 0))(“playList”, QVariant(QVariantList, ()))(“randomPlay”, QVariant(bool, false))(“repeatPlay”, QVariant(bool, false)))
    org.kde.elisa.indexers.manager: Baloo indexer is available
    org.kde.elisa.indexers.manager: Baloo indexer is active

    Which is the problem? The folder of my music has to be indexed by Baloo perhaps? It is a almost 800 GB folder with near to 130.000 files, so I didn’t want that Baloo indexes it because I think that it would be a very heavy database and since everithing indexed is in the same database, documents search would be very slow. But since Elisa is no showing any music file I have thought if it would be due to the music folder being invisible to Baloo?
    Any hint? Thank you

  5. I haven’t really had the chance to use Elisa mainly because the audio jack on my pc is broken, but also because it seems to be missing a few features that I “need”.

    – There is a “Radios” entry with examples, but I see no way to add new streams?
    – Are there any plans to support podcasts?
    – It would be really nice to be able to minimize the status bar (in lack of a better name) on the top of the window. It fills a quarter of my monitor just to show info about the currently playing track/stream.

    Other than that, I really like the simplistic design, as opposed to Amarok and Clementine.
